BEFORE the SNOW MELTS

Early summer. Hokkaido, one of the four main islands of the Japanese archipelago, is located at the northernmost tip of Japan. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the Sea of Japan, it is a land of vast natural beauty. The filming took place in Higashikawa-cho, Hokkaido, where there is still lingering snow even in mid-May, and the melting snow plays a pleasant rhythm that leaves an impressive aftertaste in the town’s scenery.

The ‘engawa’ series, which photographer Keita Goto has been shooting for some time, is a collection of daydream-like fragments. It is a collection of fragments like a daydream, like a dream you have when you doze off on the porch. What lies between the unconscious and the conscious. The visible and the invisible. This is a record of the unknown ‘something’.

This exhibition, including the latest in the series, was shot by photographer Keita Goto on his way to various locations around the ‘Town of Photography, Higashikawa Town’. From late April 2023, this group of works and previous works in the series will be exhibited at the Higashikawa-cho Cultural Gallery.
